“The General” Rig
Summary
This is the second specialization project I made during my time at TGA, which I spent two weeks working on. This project was a collaboration with the artist Amanda Westerdahl that needed a rig for one of her own specializations projects, namely The General. She needed a rig so she could pose her character in order to show of the clothing she had created which was reminiscent of the clothing worn by soldiers during the industrial revolution in England.
The general (no pun intended) premise of this rig was quite straightforward since it I already had many experiences with human rigs, however making so many pieces of clothing work well with the characters movements was quite tricky part. Since the clothing was the focus of the project it was imperative that they moved naturally as the character moves, such as the ends of the coat when the character squats. To counter this I had to make specific deformation joints that would be used to control the deformation of the clothing as the character moved.
Since there was no clear indication of what type of poses the character was going to use, I decided deck out the rig with as many features as I could, for example;
IK & FK in the arms and legs with the spine using an IK spline controlled which could also be controlled by FK controls.
Controls for the belt, satchel and the ropes around the characters waist.
On toe, on heel, foot pivot attributes for the IK foot controls.
A hat attribute to decide if the hat should follow the head or hands.
